FdA year 1 sum up

Over my first year on the FdA I have learnt a lot of things to do with the graphic design world. One of the main things I learnt was the importance of a good knowledge for typography. I learnt a lot of things to do with type in the second term where I did the design for education publicity project. I'm not brilliant at type as you may have seen but in comparison to the start of the course I have come on leaps and bounds. I hope to keep extending my knowledge of this subject in the future. I have also learnt to go through a process more when generating ideas which hopefully has made my work richer. In my work I can see a distinct style emerging which is sort of simple illustrations that I then vectorise in illustrator. I DO NOT LIKE THIS STYLE. I want to wean myself off this as soon as possible. I want to do this because I want to be more versatile and for personal reasons of becoming bored of going through the same process in most of my work this year, but is much harder than I anticipated it would be. One more thing that I have learnt this year was to look at the world with a more critical eye, picking up on design aspects I like and more so things I don't like as much. The last thing that I'm going to take on is the enjoyment and passion that I'm developing for this thing called graphic design.

patterns finished

I didn't like what I did in the work shop so I decided to do some illustrations based on life in london using a pigeon. Meant to be a bit of fun just to make my job a little bit more enjoyable.

camouflage finished

This is what I came up with for a camouflage for London taken inspiration from historical shapes to cover up the ugly building works in London.

high street mash up finals

this is what i did with the workshop joining both elements into one in a sort of architects look

map finished

this is my map finished after being vectorised and coloured red

monoprinting finish

Heres what my mono printing ended up as a mix of photography, printing and illustration.

london character update

I have decided to take the idea of a dubbled faced character for Hillingdon on i've decided to use a suitcase for the basis of the character so here are my chalked on faces which i'm going to paint on

map

This is what i'm working on for the extension to the map workshop. I want to map out some of London post codes i've picked to do south east post codes.

london souvenir

In this work shop we were asked to consider idea generation in more depth. I brought along this character which i found quite scary and not very London. As a group we discussed how this object could be placed in the seedy underbelly of the capital which lead me to undressing it and putting a message of "I went to London, and look at me now" on him to highlight life in London. I think it was a fun workshop not really going to give me a good image but good to help open up the mind to different ideas

interbrand

I visited Interbrand last monday. they generously offerd to show people on my course around showing there work and ways to work in industry. I found it very interesting and insightful to see how a big agency works. I also found it very inspiring and encouraging talk to go to giving myself kick into gear to get more active within design.

high street mash up

in this workshop as a group of about 20 we were asked to visit two contrasting high streets we collected all the images together and tried to combine the two contrasting locations into one to create a mash up of aesthetics and ideas

mapping london

this is my attempt of mapping a section of London using only type. i know that this isn't the best bit of design but i think that this technique could be used in lots of ways to create interesting images and bit of graphic design.

stencils

i did a stenciling workshop. in the workshop i was working with London icons big Ben and Battersea power station. i like the texture that its given and simple aesthetics it uses. i think that the actual stencils are stronger than the printing as a result of it.

i then took on the idea of power station and because London is going through a green-up not to a good effect if you ask me i decided to make a stencil to do with this.

camouflage

This is crating a camouflage for London. I'm looking at old architecture for this looking at the old stone and masonry used in London. I think it when the light is shinning through the patterns I made because I think it gives a different dimension to the pattern.
